Water softener

There are a few options to reduce hardness in water:

  • Use Minerals to Coat Hard Minerals: Certain water conditioning technologies use minerals or chemical agents to coat hard minerals like calcium and magnesium, preventing them from sticking to surfaces and forming scale.
  • Swap Hard Minerals with Different Salts: Ion exchange systems, such as water softeners, replace hard minerals with sodium or potassium ions, effectively reducing water hardness and preventing scale buildup.

Both the above options require the media to be constantly replaced

  • Reverse Osmosis: This filtration method forces water through a semipermeable membrane, removing hard minerals and other dissolved solids, providing soft, but dead water that is void of any minerals and not good to drink.
  • Chelation: Water treatment agents, known as chelators such as KDF55, bind to hard minerals, preventing them from forming scale without adding sodium or other salts.
  • Magnetic or Electronic Descalers: These devices alter the electromagnetic properties of hard minerals, reducing their ability to form scale and making them easier to remove from water.
  • Galvanic Reactions for Water Softening: These devices utilize a galvanic reaction, which is an electrochemical process occurring between two different metals in the presence of an electrolyte (in this case, water). When water flows through the device, the interaction between the metals creates a weak electrical current. This current alters the physical properties of the calcium and magnesium ions (the primary causes of water hardness), preventing them from precipitating out of the water and forming scale on surfaces such as pipes, appliances, and fixtures.

The prefilters all use the chelation method that will help with slightly hard water but anything above 80ppm needs an additional device such as the water softener that uses galvanic reactions.

The galvanic water softener specifications

  • Average Flow 5 Litres per min
  • Max Flow 8 Litres per min
  • ½” BSP female threads on both side
  • Length 112mm
  • Material 316SS (Stainless Steel)

Benefits of Galvanic Water Softener:

  • No Chemical Additives: Unlike traditional ion exchange systems, galvanic devices do not require salt or other chemicals to function, making them more environmentally friendly.
  • Maintenance-Free: These systems typically require minimal maintenance since they do not involve replacing salt or resin beads.
  • Cost-Effective: They can be more cost-effective over the long term due to lower operational and maintenance costs.
  • Retains Essential Minerals: Galvanic devices retain beneficial minerals in the water, which can be advantageous for health and taste compared to traditional water softening methods that remove these minerals.
  • Scale Prevention: By preventing the precipitation and buildup of scale, these devices can extend the lifespan and efficiency of plumbing systems and appliances.

Installation

It can be installed directly onto the water supply line with minimal disruption.

A few common ways it can be installed:

1. Install in between the ½” copper line and flexible water line
2. Install in between the ½” copper line and the twin under sink isolation valve adapter
3. Add ½” to 6mm water filter hose adapter on either end and it can go pre or post water filter
